I’m so excited to bring this transformation mindset blog to you. Whatever change you seek, it starts within. I met Sarah a few months ago. I was a vendor at a women’s conference at Victory Cathedral and she stopped by (I don’t believe in luck but I believe we were supposed to meet). As we talked and she inquired about a photoshoot we began talking about the conference and how much it helped her. She proceeded to tell me that she had been on an extreme journey and after hearing it I figured I HAD to share her story. It is one of self-realization, perseverance and a phenomenal change. So without further ado, meet my friend Sarah.
I’m sure you have heard it before, but change begins in the mind. And that’s where my story of Sarah begins. She is a wife and mother of 4 amazing children, ages from 2-15, including one child with autism. But Sarah was stuck. She weighed 300 pounds. Sarah is not very tall and the weight was taking a toll on her quality of life. Imagine not being able to adequately clean yourself. Think about getting tired just trying to tie your shoes. Can you fathom trying to walk a flight of stairs? Better yet, what about chasing around 4 active children.
Sarah was in a bad place. After her last pregnancy, she was faced with gestational diabetes and the need for multiple medications just to make it through a day. After meeting with her Doctor to understand the ramifications of the medicine, she DECIDED to make a change. No longer could she live with the limits that existed. No longer would she struggle with some of the “simple things” of life. With her kids in mind and a desire for more, she decided it was time to make a change. It starts within!
Initially, when she asked what she had to do, the doctor talked about medicine, which she didn’t want to take. She informed the doctor she would prefer to work to lose the weight. The Doctor said that it would be extremely hard to do. Doesn’t this sound like some of the people around us when we decide what we are about to do? Well, that won’t be easy. You shouldn’t do it that way. There are people quick to say what you can’t do. PROVE THEM WRONG! Sarah changed her mindset and began to make the necessary diet and exercise changes. Understand, the process wasn’t easy, but Sarah lost 120 lbs in 18 months.
Part of the process for Sarah was true self-awareness. She had to unlearn bad habits, identify triggers and have accountability to ensure she stayed on track. It’s next to impossible to do something different when you don’t take an introspective look, remember it starts within. If she didn’t believe she could, she wouldn’t have made it. Now that the weight is gone, she has made fitness goals and has a plan to continue eating right. Beyond maintaining, she also wants to begin shaping her newfound body. And the key here is that she is not doing it for anyone but herself. She wants to enjoy the gains of her effort. She also stated how important it was to please God because her body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Sarah is making it her purpose to help others in their journey too. She has created a FB group to share and encourage others. She is also in the process of writing a book to help others make the changes necessary for living a better life. One of her biggest challenges throughout this process was that of vulnerability. It’s one thing to go through the process in secret and come out 120 lbs lighter, but it’s totally different opening up and showing the battle wounds of the journey. It was hard to share that she couldn’t wash properly or even tie her shoes. Sometimes the hard part isn’t her speaking her truth, but the receiver being ready to hear it and accept their own journey of self-awareness. Sarah now realizes that the truth of her story will liberate others so she now unashamedly shares even the dark moments of her past.
Genuine love starts with loving self. It’s impossible to love others if you haven’t first established an internal love. It’s also imperative not to get entangled in the sin of comparison. We see others with these amazing bodies (or at least that’s what we see, spandex creates an amazing facade). We see the illusion of beauty. Especially with social media and people posting “perfect pics” that took 20 takes and 30 different filters before posting. Here’s the thing, YOU WERE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD. PERIOD. That should be enough to change your perspective right there. You look like HIM. So start within and begin loving yourself like never before. Change is possible, it starts within.
Sarah’s goal is mass healing for others who are stuck just like she was. One thing she said to me that really baffled me, but shows how much we take for granted. She said she loves seeing her hands. When she wasn’t free, she didn’t like seeing them, couldn’t use them like she wanted and they were a sore spot for her. Now they are something she is proud of. Now she is putting her hands to the plow to help as many people as she can. Sarah is willing and ready to help awaken the giant within those that are lost and struggling. Her closing thoughts were this. If you think you can’t, you won’t. You have to change your mind. Everything you desire is waiting on you, it starts within.
